A downloadable tool

While not the most practical tool yet, Bad Guitar VR explores the future possibilities of using extended reality for guitar learning, designed with next-generation devices in mind.

The app attempts to teach you harmony and improvisation by playing backing tracks and showing scale suggestions on your guitar's fretboard in mixed reality. You can also browse or create scales and check out a couple of experimental visualizations, such as a comically clumsy pair of ghost hands "playing" your guitar.

The tracking of your guitar is achieved by attaching the left controller to it, turning your guitar into a controller extension. If you just want to see what the app is about, don't worry; you can simply draw the virtual neck in the air where you can see it.

If you'd like to create your own exercises, see the PDF in the downloads. Note that custom content doesn't work with version 1.0.4 or earlier if your headset is up-to-date.

Requirements

  • Meta Quest headset with ~500MB of free storage space (tested on Quest 2 & Quest 3; let me know if it works with the other ones) and means to sideload the .apk file (see the install instructions).
  • Means to attach the left controller to your guitar if you want your guitar to be tracked (do this at your own risk). Currently, only six-string guitars are supported.
